Steve Biko shares his ideal of a non-racial egalitarian society

On the 12th September 1977 medical student and anti-apartheid activist Steve Biko was murdered in police custody in South Africa. Biko understood the psychology of inferiority experienced by his community as well as the physical shackles of racist apartheid South Africa. He advocated Black Consciousness as a form of empowerment, advocating solidarity amongst Black South Africans, their articulation of their inspirations and their involvement in the governance of their lives. Biko highlighted the fact that White people were both the main participants in the oppression of Black South Africans, whilst simultaneously being the main participants in the opposition to this oppression - leaving Black South Africans mute. Steve Biko became the voice of a generation desperate for freedom, encouraging his community to define themselves and participate in their own liberation. His memory will live on forever. R.I.P.
