A One-Man Band Runs a Small College’s Web Site and Marketing
Jay Walterreit’s official title is director of public information and marketing at Alpena Community College. But that doesn’t describe the half of it.
Mr. Walterreit is the only person at Alpena responsible for government relations, media relations, marketing, branding, the Web site, and social media. In his spare time, he puts together the Michigan college’s course catalog for its 2,000 students.
Most community colleges have never spent heavily to promote themselves, and budget cuts have whittled away at even those meager efforts. But as an extreme case, Alpena illustrates why small public colleges can struggle to communicate to prospective students and the public.
